Fitting Amplifiers in a Tight Space

Some of the biggest vehicles can have the smallest available space for installing an audio system. Car Concepts Inc., in Salt Lake City, has solved this quandry with a creative solution.

In a previous article, installer Scott Doran showed us how he accomplished outfitting this big truck (a Chevy Silverado) with big bass by putting subwoofer enclosures under the truck. Many readers asked how Scott was able to fit all of the amplifiers in the truck to power the truck’s new system. Here, he shows you how.

Chevy Silverado rear seat removal

This truck started with a 60/40 split bench rear seat. Space was needed between the rear seats for an amp rack.

Chevy Silverado rear bucket seats

With an air saw and welder, the rear seats are transformed into bucket seats.

Chevy Silverado rear seat spacing

Notice the careful attention paid to proper spacing that helps create the factory look of the final work.

Chevy Silverado amp frame

A frame is built that will hold the amp’s shelves in place.

Chevy Silverado amp shelves

With one side of the amp rack’s frame removed, you can see the shelves that were constructed.

Chevy Silverado amp rack

The seats are put in place to ensure clearance. Notice how the amps are angled to allow two to fit into one space.

Chevy Silverado amp fiberglass

A ½-inch piece of fiberglass is bent to match the curve of the rack. This keeps the amps exposed and protected. The amps are accented with blue neon.

Chevy Silverado knock-out panel

At the rear of the door, you’ll find a hidden knock-out panel. Remove the silver TORX screw.

Chevy Silverado black vinyl cover

Black vinyl is added to conceal all wooden areas.
